“Generous listening is powered by curiosity, a virtue we can invite and nurture in ourselves to render it instinctive. It involves a kind of vulnerability - a willingness to be surprised, to let go of assumptions and take in ambiguity. The listener wants to understand the humanity behind the words of the other, and patiently summons one's own best self and one's own best words and questions.”
― Krista TippettBecoming Wise: An Inquiry into the Mystery and Art of Living

Krista Tippett, host of NPR’s On Being, offers these wise words about listening to one another. Generous listening is not just being silent but being present, bringing curiosity and a readiness to be changed and influenced by what we hear from each other. This is good spiritual practice in the church and it is an aspect of our shared values at PCC, to listen in this vulnerable and respectful way.

During Lent, could we also seek to listen to God in this generous and vulnerable way, with “the willingness to be surprised”? As you reflect on Scripture, participate in worship, cultivate your life with God, observe your chosen Lenten practices, let us offer Jesus our humble curiosity and willingness to be formed by the Spirit.

Grace and Peace,

Keep these opportunities to gather together in mind over the next few weeks:

Lenten Focus: Neighborhood Listening

During Lent our all-church, inter-departmental emphasis will be on listening to our neighbors.

Feb. 26th thru April 15: Lenten disciplines: Pair up with a friend to practice a weekly discipline of eating, shopping or walking in our immediate neighborhood. Pick up a devotional guide at the table in the gym, and commit to taking small steps to notice, meet, and listen to our neighbors. This week's action step: As you walk, shop or dine in our neighborhood, look for someone familiar you’ve seen before. Greet them, introduce yourself and learn their name.

 • 9 am Sundays, Feb. 26ththru April 9th: Journey to the Cross, photo edition!PasCov youth team up with kids' for photo scavenger hunts; bring a digital camera.

 • Neighborhood BBQ: Sat., April 22nd 10-2 pm: We willinvite our neighbors to join us for a BBQ in the parking lot. We need lots of volunteers to help!

Sanctuary of Women: March 5 - April 16

Images of God in Scripture include feminine metaphors as a midwife, a woman in labor, and a breastfeeding mother. Join us for a prayerful, contemplative 7 week class (starting March 5 and culminating on Easter Sunday, April 16) in which we hope to center ourselves on these feminine metaphors and connect with Mother God in new ways. We will meet in the Corner House, starting promptly at 8:45am and ending at 10:15am. Pastoral Search Team Update; Congregational Meeting: April 2nd

After communal discernment between the trustees, staff, and pastoral search team, the trustees are nominating two candidates to replace Mark Gustafson and Caila Rinker on the search team. As both Mark and Caila are married to staff members, replacing them seems prudent to ensure that the search process avoid any conflict of interest or perception of a conflict of interest either now or in the future. This will also help support transparent communication during the search process, both among search team members and between the team and the trustees, staff, and congregation. The congregation will be asked to vote on these replacements April 2. Please email Kyle Michealsen at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) if you have any questions.
